Constituents in California’s 48th District have been asking their congressman, Dana Rohrabacher, to host an in person town hall, in an effort to be a part of the democratic process and have a constructive dialogue about the nature of their representation in congress. Town halls are a time honored American tradition, where people have their voices heard, allowing their representatives to better understand the needs of their constituents.
We the people of the California 48th District believe we deserve better. So we decided to help Dana out, and set up a town hall for him. We have extended an invitation to Mr. Rohrabacher using formal and creative channels, with the hopes that he will see this as an opportunity to genuinely engage with his constituents.
Some people in congress believe that town halls are an important part of the democratic process, and we’re proud to have a friend in Congressman Ted Lieu. Congressman Ted Lieu, from California’s 33th District, has kindly accepted our invitation to speak at our Town Hall.
Congressman Rohrabacher hosts telephonic town halls, which we believe are not a transparent and democratic way to survey his constituents. There is limited advance notice, the questions are heavily screened, there is no space for follow-up questions, and, because the press are not included, there is no accountability in these meetings.
This town hall will have a moderator to make sure questions will remain civil, everyone is invited with more than a month’s notice, and, if you cannot make it, the event will be live streamed and you can read about it in the Sunday paper because the press will be there.
Above all this is a safe and respectful space where people from the 48th district can make their voices heard, and have explanations for what is going on in our government today.
If you have the ability to donate to cover costs for the event, we’d greatly appreciate it. We’re not charging ticket prices so that the event can be as accessible as possible. http://www.youcaring.com/indivisibleoc48-866263
